SEREMBAN: Pakatan Rakyat has been urged to choose a candidate from one of its youth wings for the Merlimau state seat.
The call came today from the new youth chief for Negeri Sembilan PKR, Mohd Nazree Mohd Yunus, who commended the Pakatan leadership for agreeing to field a woman for the Jan 30 by-election in Tenang.
The call came today from the new youth chief for Negeri Sembilan PKR, Mohd Nazree Mohd Yunus, who commended the Pakatan leadership for agreeing to field a woman for the Jan 30 by-election in Tenang.
The Merlimau seat, in Malacca, became vacant last week with the death of Umno’s Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hassan. The Election Commission will meet this Friday to decide on the nomination and polling dates for the by-election.
Mohd Nazree said Pakatan should show its appreciation for the “very prominent role” that youths played in the opposition alliance, like it had recognised the contribution of women by choosing PAS’ Normala Sudirman for Tenang.
“The youth members of PKR, PAS and DAP have always given their maximum in by-election campaigns since the great win of March 2008,” he said.
“So, for Merlimau, I call upon Pakatan’s top leadership to give a youth candidate a shot. This will further strengthen the spirit of Pakatan youths for the coming general election.”
Mohd Nazree said the Merlimau by-election would probably be the last before the next general election. The law does not require a by-election if any state or parliamentary seat falls vacant after March 8 this year.
“I don’t expect the Port Klang by-election to take place as the Election Commission will fight tooth and nail to avoid it, like it did in the case of Kota Seputeh in Kedah,” he said.
The speaker of the Selangor legislative assembly last week declared the Port Klang seat vacant, saying its representative, Badrul Hisham Abdullah, had failed to attend assembly sittings for six months. Badrul Hisham is challenging the expulsion in court.
At today’s press conference, Mohd Nazree announced the names of the Negeri Sembilan PKR youth councilors for the 2010-2013 session. The lineup is as follows:
Youth Chief: Mohd Nazree Mohd Yunus
Deputy Youth Chief: Halim Abdul Aziz
Vice Youth Chiefs: Mohd Helmi Maarof, Jayson Tang, K. Sachithananthan
Secretary: Muhamad Affandi Abdul Malik
Information Chief: Abdul Malik Adam
Deputy Information Chief: Faiz Abdullah
Treasurer: Kamarul Nizam Abdul Ghani
